THE ROLE IN A SENTENCE
Reporting to Executive Director, Greater Houston, the Advocacy Director, Greater Houston will build and manage our local advocacy strategy from the ground up, uniting and lifting the voice of Latino children and families across Greater Houston in pursuit of better educational outcomes.

 

ROLE OVERVIEW

Greater Houston Advocacy Strategy and Execution 50%

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, design Latinos for Education’s local advocacy vision, strategy, and execution plan.
  • Develop and manage a wide-range of pathways for Latinos for Education's Fellows and network to get involved with education advocacy.

Research and Special Projects 20%

  • Lead and oversee the organization's local education research efforts.
  • Stay up-to-date on latest education policy developments in Houston and state-wide.

Community Engagement 20%

  • Engage and activate our broader Latino network in Greater Houston to elevate the Latino voice in education and advocate on behalf of Latino students and families.
  • Serve as a key leader externally related to education policy issues and liaise between our senior leadership and elected/ appointed officials, legislative aides, and community leaders.
  • Design and execute advocacy-related events and convenings.

General Management and Operations 10%

  • Track relationships and engagement in Salesforce. 
  • Maintain project plans and effectively manage teammates to outcomes.
  • Participate in team meetings, retreats, and contribute to a positive team culture.

OUR PERSON 

Required:

  • Based in Greater Houston
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 7+ years' experience in education policy/advocacy and/or community organizing; 8-10 years of professional experience
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and enjoys variety in their work
  • Cultural competence in working with the Latino community
  • Committed to our core values and mission

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in policy or related field
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM
